I have received and returned your argumentation papers. Looking through my gradebook, I have noticed a few students are missing one, or both, of these papers. If you have not gotten a paper back from me with a grade, I did not originally receive it. Please get in touch!

Here are some ideas for your final paper. You may write about the Doyle stories or something related to the text brought up in the secondary sources. In addition, a few students have approached me about expanding their argumentation paper for their final paper. That is also very acceptable and has worked well in the past.

Here are some Doyle related potential paper topics

1. In general, the role of women in the stories

2. More specifically, the role of disguise and the vanishing of women

3. The Married Women’s Property Act of 1885

4. The New Poor Law of 1834

5. Drug use, opium, cocaine, and otherwise, in the stories

Those of you doing your argumentation paper on GMO’s might want to check out this National Public Radio story on GM canola “escaping” a field.

In general, your papers are very well done and interesting. The class average is a 9.2/10, which is very impressive. I have finished grading most of them, so I thought I would mention a few of the problems I have seen with them:

• Do not make statements like “in my opinion,” “I believe,” etc. This is very redundant: your readers will assume that you are already expressing a viewpoint. Also, this sort of phrasing makes a writer sound apologetic for having a viewpoint. Avoid.
• Refresh yourself on your usage of commas. I am seeing a decent amount of misplaced commas.
• Numbers: Numbers below ten should be typed out. Above then use the number (11, 453, etc).
• Transitions: Make sure when using words like “also” you are adding a comma to them.
